Admission uses age bands, with separate rates for adults, children, seniors, military visitors, infants, and members. The city says online general-admission tickets are valid for a normal admission date in the year purchased, but not for special events or fundraisers. Free parking keeps the arrival simple. Wheelchairs and wagons are rented first come, first served, so bring your own mobility plan if a rental is essential.

The zoo describes roughly ten developed acres within Tautphaus Park. That scale helps families who do not want miles of walking. It also means the experience depends more on pacing than on racing through a checklist. Pick several priority animals, use the map, and allow children time at the exhibits they actually watch.

The collection changes as animals move between institutions and habitats. The city's 2026 opening announcement reported more than 230 animals representing over 90 species, while the main zoo page used a broader figure of around 130 species. Those numbers may reflect different counting dates or page updates. A planning guide should not turn either figure into a promise. The useful fact is that the zoo has several geographic exhibit areas in a walkable footprint.

Funland is next to the zoo, but it is a separate seasonal attraction. The city restored its classic rides and announced a 2026 season beginning in late May. Families should check Funland's own hours and prices before promising rides. A zoo ticket should not be described as including Funland unless the current ticket page explicitly says so.

For preschool children, the combination can become too much after a full zoo loop. Make Funland optional. Older children may prefer a shorter zoo visit followed by rides. Tautphaus Park also gives the group room for a break without purchasing another activity.

Bring water, sun protection, layers for changing weather, and a stroller that can handle a few hours if needed. Review the zoo's guest rules before packing food or expecting a particular service. Use the current map to find restrooms and decide on one meeting point in case the group separates.

The cleanest plan is a morning zoo visit with one optional second activity. Tuesday evening is useful for a shorter local outing.
