Ririe Reservoir: choose Blacktail or Juniper before leaving Idaho Falls

Blacktail is the simpler choice for a picnic, day-use gathering, or boat launch. The county lists picnic tables, a launch, mooring slips, fishing and destination docks, vault restrooms, and shelters that can be reserved online. It does not allow overnight camping and has no potable water.

That last detail changes the packing list. Bring enough drinking water for everyone, plus extra for heat and delays. Do not expect a faucet to refill bottles. A reserved shelter can help a larger group establish a base, but the reservation does not replace the daily entrance fee unless the current booking terms explicitly say so.

The Bureau of Reclamation describes a swimming area at Blacktail, but shoreline conditions and reservoir elevation change. Treat swimming as conditional on current conditions and posted rules. Adults should inspect the entry, keep children within reach, and use properly fitted life jackets around boats and docks.

Juniper is the overnight option. Bonneville County lists tent and dry-camping areas, full-hookup sites, picnic facilities, fire rings, a boat launch, docks, vault restrooms, and drinking water. Its A Loop uses reservations through the campground system, while county notices may place other loops on a first-come basis. Read the current reservation page before counting on a site.

The posted county fees distinguish ordinary weekdays from weekends and holidays, and separate day use from overnight camping. Prices are mutable. Use the live county page when budgeting, especially for a holiday weekend or a group shelter.

Juniper's developed campground makes it a better base for visitors who need water and an overnight site. It is not automatically the better swimming stop. The older federal management plan notes steep access near the launch and variable accessibility across the facility. Current on-site conditions control.

Ririe is a working reservoir used for flood control and irrigation as well as recreation. Water levels can drop during the season, affecting ramps and shoreline access. Reclamation publishes ramp-end elevations for Blacktail and Juniper, but the elevation table alone does not say whether today's ramp is usable. Compare current reservoir elevation with the ramp information and contact the county when the margin is close.

Build a second plan if launching is the entire purpose of the trip. A picnic can survive a closed ramp; a trailered boat day may not. Carry required safety equipment, clean and drain the boat to limit invasive species, and follow current Idaho boating rules.

Benchland and Willow Point offer shelters, tables, fire rings, grass, and places to stop or stay overnight, according to the county. They are boat-access sites. Do not send part of a group there by road or assume emergency supplies are available. Pack out trash and confirm current fire restrictions before using a fire ring.

For a mixed group, establish Blacktail or Juniper as the meeting point. Add a boat-only stop only after every passenger, flotation device, and return plan is accounted for.

Pick Blacktail for a contained day visit with water brought from home. Pick Juniper for camping, potable water, or a longer stay. Use neither without checking current fees, reservoir level, weather, and fire restrictions.

Ririe Reservoir works best as a planned water outing rather than an improvised roadside stop. The drive is short enough from Idaho Falls to encourage a casual trip, but limited access and changing water make the correct park choice important.
